SHOCKING: Capitalism Approval Sinks to Record Low – Gallup

Support for capitalism has plummeted to its lowest level in 15 years, with just 54% of Americans now viewing the economic system positively, according to a new Gallup poll released Monday.

The survey results reveal a significant shift in American attitudes, marking a troubling decline for capitalism’s public image. This represents a 6-point drop from 2021, when 60 percent of U.S. adults held positive views of the economic system. The poll, conducted through telephone interviews with 1,094 adults between Aug. 1-20, carries a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Political Divide Deepens on Economic Views

Democrats have driven much of this decline in public perception of capitalism, with fewer than half now seeing it positively for the first time since Gallup began asking the question. Just 42 percent of Democrats support capitalism today, down from 50 percent in 2021.

The shift becomes more striking when compared to the first survey taken just after the Great Recession, which showed 51 percent of Democrats had a positive view of capitalism. Meanwhile, Republicans have remained relatively stable with 74 percent support, up from 72 percent in 2021 and comparable to the 71 percent since 2010.

Independents Join the Shift Away

Independents have also recorded a similar decrease in their perception of capitalism, with support dropping from 59 percent in 2021 to 51 percent in the latest survey. This represents a notable change from 2010, when 61 percent of independents had a positive image of capitalism.

The past four years have seen this group move away from capitalism, reflecting broader concerns about economic inequality and corporate power. In 2018, support dipped to 56 percent but bounced back to 60 percent the following year, suggesting the current trend may be more sustained.

Socialism Gains Ground Among Americans

While support for capitalism wanes, socialism has saw 39 percent support overall in the new survey. Democrats lead this trend with 66 percent viewing socialism positively, compared to 38 percent of independents and just 14 percent of Republicans.

These numbers represent slight changes from 2021, when socialism was perceived positively by 65 percent of Democrats, 40 percent of independents, and 10 percent of Republicans. The data suggests Americans are increasingly open to alternative economic systems.

Historical Context Shows Shifting Attitudes

Support for capitalism remained largely stable from when the question was first asked in 2010 through 2021. The 2010 baseline showed 61 percent of Americans had a positive view of capitalism, which held steady at around 60 percent for over a decade.

This record low represents a significant departure from that stability. The survey asks respondents to give a response “just off the top of your head” when asked about their image of capitalism, suggesting these are gut reactions rather than carefully considered positions.

What This Means for You

The decline in capitalism support could signal major political and economic changes ahead. With fewer than half of Democrats supporting the current economic system, expect increased calls for reforms ranging from higher corporate taxes to expanded social programs.

Meanwhile, the relatively stable Republican support suggests this will likely become an even sharper political dividing line in upcoming elections. The 4 percentage points margin of error means the actual numbers could be even more dramatic, potentially showing capitalism support below 50% overall.
